NUTLEY, NJ — Leave it to Santa Claus to make a grand entrance. On Friday, Nov. 27, an unusually balmy day, Christmas music filled the air at the Nutley Oval, where hundreds of eager children and smiling families were on hand for the big arrival of Santa Claus, via a festive holiday-red helicopter.
Santa and his special guest Mrs. Claus, are busy this time of year preparing gifts for Christmas morning around the world, so the Nutley Chamber of Commerce — as always — stepped in to arrange for them an entrance fit for royalty.
There were 500 stuffed gift bags donated by Nutley merchants for the first children to arrive at the event, and it was also a great time for merchants to remind residents that Shop Small Saturday would be Nov. 28, the following day.
Nutley Mayor Alphonse Petracco set up a special mailbox for direct delivery to Santa Claus, and there were many characters, balloon artists, and even IWF wrestlers in the Oval. The wrestlers were brought to the scene by Nutley’s own Kevin Knight, a wrestler who owns the local IWF Wrestling Center.
With hot chocolate and door prizes, the crowd was thrilled, and cheered loudly when the red dot and whirl of the helicopter came into sight, circling for plenty of waves before landing handily on the Nutley Oval.
As always, there was a long yet happy line at the balloon area, where two creative balloon stylists whipped up animals, shapes and festive creations for fans.
There were raffles this year, including the 500 goody bags filled with swag for the kids.
Also on hand were the incredible dancers from Nutley, who train at Dance Techniques. And the DJ kept everyone dancing, with the help of the special IWF-inspired characters brought in by Nutley’s own Knight.
But the star, as always, was Santa, who held Mrs. Claus’ hand and visited every one of the many children who packed the Oval.
