MAPLEWOOD, NJ – Junior shortstop Hudson Hassler collected her 100th career hit to lead the Columbia High School varsity softball team to an 11-1 win over Montclair Kimberley Academy May 8 at Meadowland Park in a Super Essex Conference game.
Hassler finished with two hits. Junior Claire Salinardo had three hits, including a double and triple, and three RBI, junior Samantha Carlton had a single, double and two RBI; and sophomore Sydney Waldon fired a one-hitter with nine strikeouts for the Cougars, who improved to a 12-8 record.
The Cougars, seeded eighth, lost to top-seeded Cedar Grove, 5-0, in the Essex County Tournament quarterfinals May 11 in Verona. Columbia moved to a 12-9 record on the season.
In earlier action, the Cougars defeated West Orange, 13-3, May 6 in a Super Essex Conference game at West Orange. Hassler had two hits and two RBI; Waldon had two hits and three RBI; and Salinardo had two hits and three runs scored. Carlton and fellow junior Ellie Mischel each had an RBI. Waldon struck out six over 2 ⅔ innings pitched for the win.
Columbia lost at Caldwell, 8-1, May 7 in a SEC game.
