Nutley HS football team looks to regroup from season-opening loss

NUTLEY, NJ – The Nutley High School varsity football team hopes to bounce back from its season-opening loss to West Essex in the debut of the North Jersey Super Football Conference (NJSFC).

The Raiders will visit Bloomfield on Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. in a NJSFC non-division game.

Nutley fell to West Essex, 27-7, in the season opener Sept. 8 at West Essex in North Caldwell in a NJSFC Patriot White Division game  in a rematch of last year’s state North Jersey Section 2, Group 3 playoff quarterfinal won by West Essex.

After West Essex took a 14-0 lead on touchdowns in the first and second quarters, junior quarterback Frank DeMaio got the Raiders on the scoreboard with a 35-yard TD run in the second quarter, followed by senior Hunter Lechthaler’s point-after kick, to cut it to 14-7 at the half.

West Essex broke open the game on Brian O’Neill’s second and third TD runs of the game in the third and fourth quarter respectively.

Bloomfield crushed Columbia, 42-6, in its season opener Sept. 8 in Maplewood in a NJSFC Liberty Blue Division game.
