WEST ORANGE, NJ – The Seton Hall Prep baseball team won its two games played this week to raise its record to 4-1 on the season.
On Monday, April 8, the Pirates defeated Nutley, 3-2, in 10 innings in a very exciting game. In the second inning, Seton Hall took a 2-0 lead when Lucas Zyska singled in Karson Harcourt and Joseph DeCicco squeezed home Dan Savino. In the third inning, Nutley got one back in the third inning when Trevor Santos brought home a run on an infield ground out. In the fourth inning, Justin Lucia singled in a run to tie the score. In the 10th inning, Seton Hall’s Jack Eichler led off with an infield single and went to second on an infield throwing error. Nick Maldonado was intentionally walked, bringing up Alex Duffey. Duffey launched a fly ball down the left-field line to bring home Eichler with the winning run.
Starter Tommy O’Rourke pitched great in seven innings, allowing two runs, none earned, on two hits with nine strikeouts and one walk. Dan Savino earned the victory with three innings pitched with three strikeouts.
Following the game, Duffey said, “I have never had a walk-off hit in any level of baseball I have played and it is just an amazing feeling.” Head Coach Mike Sheppard Jr. added, “It was a nice win against a good Nutley team. We had a good outing from O’Rourke who threw well and Danny Savino really battled out there while doing a good job in relief. Duffey, who is only a sophomore, came through with a big hit.”
On Wednesday, April 10, the Pirates traveled to Livingston to take on Newark Academy and won,12-0. Tyler Kaufman had a three-run home run while Chris Maldonado was 2-for-3 with three RBI. O’Rourke was 3-for-4 with an RBI, Harcourt was 2-for-3, three runs scored and an RBI, Justin Cassella was 2-for-4 with an RBI, Zyska and Eichler each had one hit and one RBI while Ethan Young had a sac fly to drive in a run.
