MAPLEWOOD, NJ — From Nov. 5 through 30, two Columbia High School alumni, professional artists Sarah Langsam and Josh Sender, will display their work in the school’s Domareki Galley.
Langsam and Sender both spent the bulk of their childhood growing up in the SOMA area and are members of the CHS Class of 2009. While they may not have kept in touch, they have strong memories of making art alongside one another in AP art and other art classes at Columbia. Both artists are now practicing on the East Coast, Langsam in the N.J./NYC area and Sender in the Baltimore/D.C. area.
Although they had a similar upbringing and art instruction in their earlier years, the contrast between the two artists’ work in ever apparent. There is a strong juxtaposition between Sender’s two-dimensional photographic work, which explores the history in photomaking and distillation of ideas into symbols, and Langsam’s three-dimensional pieces exploring the human relation to nature, pattern, repetitiveness and the use of repurposed materials.
