County residents excel at music competition

EAST HANOVER, NJ — Students of the Calderone School of Music performed at the 2016 Annual Mid Atlantic Music Teachers Guild Festival and Competition. Students who sing or play solo piano, violin, guitar, woodwinds, brass, duets and bands with any combination of instruments, and percussion, compete with other students within their age group and according to specific repertoire they perform at the competition. Overall, 27 CSM students participated, with 17 placing in places one through five, and with six students or duets in first place for their category.

Essex County winners include:

  • Thedoe Nyunt of Short Hills, first place in piano open classical solo intermediate A;
  • Elizabeth Lang of Livingston, third place in piano open classical solo freshman B;
  • Karen Zheng of Newark, flutist, third place in woodwinds open solo intermediate;
  • Devanshi Banerjee of Short Hills, voice student, fourth place in voice pop solo intermediate A and fifth place in voice classical solo intermediate; and
  • Lily Sharma of South Orange, voice student, fifth place in voice classical solo junior.
