Crossing cultures with the CCR at XRootsFest

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — The South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race presented the fifth annual XRootsFest in Maplewood Memorial Park on June 2. The event featured musicians, dancers, food vendors, merchants and more. An area for children was set up with a bounce house and other activities; alongside it was an “Edu-tainment” tent, where various cultural groups had tables to educate festival-goers on their traditions and beliefs.

Though the day was cloudy with pockets of rain — which likely caused some acts to bow out and some residents to stay inside — the event provided fun and enjoyment to those attending. A highlight was the Native American performance group Red Storm Drum and Dance Troupe, with traditional drumming, cultural clothing and dance activities to join.
