SOUTH ORANGE, NJ — Grammy Award-winner and seven-time Grammy Award-nominee Patty Griffin is famed in song and verse for her prolific career. She brings her extensive catalogue of music, which spans from Americana to folk and country, to the South Orange Performing Arts Center, 1 SOPAC Way, on Friday, July 27, at 8 p.m., along with opening artist Rose Cousins.
The eclectic singer-songwriter made her debut in 1996 with “Living With Ghosts.” The album made waves in the industry, and her 1998 follow-up, “Flaming Red,” secured her status in the industry as a notable talent on the rise. The two albums, now both considered seminal works of Americana and modern folk, put her on the road to receive a number of prestigious awards, such as the Americana Music Association’s “Artist of the Year,” and “Album of the Year” for her 2007 album “Children Running Through.”
Not one to be categorized, Griffin has also dabbled in country and gospel music, a homage to her Austin, Texas, roots. Her 2010 gospel album “Downtown Church” earned a Grammy Award for “Best Traditional Gospel Album.” Eagerly working toward her much-anticipated next album, Griffin is as open as ever to new sounds and new songs.
Opening artist Rose Cousins is a Canadian JUNO Award-winning songwriter. Her latest work, the Joe Henry-produced “Natural Conclusion,” was nominated for a 2018 Grammy Award.
