WEST ORANGE, NJ — JCC MetroWest presents an exhibit of pastels and paintings by Gaelen Juried Art Show award winners Carol Clemens and Arthur Meranus. The exhibit takes place in the Gaelen Gallery East at the Leon & Toby Cooperman JCC, Ross Family Campus, 760 Northfield Ave., West Orange. The exhibit will be on view Sept. 10 through Oct. 28. A reception will be held on Sunday, Sept. 10, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“It is always remarkable to me that one starts with nothing, a blank page, and with a few marks of pigment creates something that didn’t exist before but is still recognizable as if it were a real thing,” pastelist Carol Clemens said in a press release. “How incredible is that? It is wonderful when my art speaks to others but ultimately I am my own toughest client. A mostly self-educated artist, I am driven to push the limits of my abilities.”

An active member of many art groups and associations, Clemens has won many awards in solo and group exhibitions.

Painter Arthur Meranus describes himself as a “painter in progress” who “continues to learn to paint” despite a successful exhibiting career, a long and successful career in advertising, and taking many classes with well-known artists.

“Some of what I didn’t take the time to understand about the abstract expressionists at Brooklyn College in the ’50s, made real sense in the ’70s and ’80s,” Meranus said.

His paintings are powerful, vibrant, and carefully structured. He is more concerned with design and motion than subject matter.

Burt Allen Solomon’s Israel photographs, in the Arts/Theater Lobby, express a unique view of contemporary Israel. By creating images in only black and white, Solomon highlights the special character of both Israel and Israelis without the distractions of color.

Dreidels from the collection of Janet Resnick fill the Steiner Court Showcases. The variety is extraordinary and a wonderful way to usher in the holiday season.
