WEST ORANGE, NJ — With its Caribbean harmonies, rhythmic movement and a story line of two star-crossed lovers, “Once On This Island Jr.” was an emotional and stirring experience at Roosevelt Middle School on the weekend of April 27.

Set in the French Antilles, the musical tells the story of Ti Moune, a young peasant girl who falls in love with a member of the island’s aristocracy while nursing him back to health. Looking over Ti Moune on her journey are the gods: Asaka, mother of the earth; Agwé, god of water; Erzulie, goddess of love; and Papa Ge, demon of death. Although young Daniel Beauxhomme falls for Ti Moune, he is all too aware of his duties and responsibilities regarding his upcoming nuptials to Andrea. The unrequited love that Ti Moune has ultimately transforms her into a catalyst for change and growth to unite the two populations on the island. Storytellers, singers and dancers helped bring the story to life, proving that love is stronger than death.

Dynamic performances by Maria Nalieth as Ti Moune, Kassidy Scott as Erzulie and Aden Lugo as Papa Ge, along with a strong supporting cast and ensemble, ensured that “Once On This Island Jr.” resonated emotionally with the audience.

Patrick McLaughlin directed and choreographed; Tracy Gordon produced; scenery was designed by Janis Oliver; and Terri Purcell was the costumer. Nicholas Vonhagel provided lighting design and Kirk Roberts the sound design.

The cast — made up of actors, storytellers, singers, dancers and more — included Oona Callender, Hailey Miller, Elena Hause, Lance Zeligson, Maria Nalieth, Giancarlo Minervino, Charlie Peterson, Carlos Henriquez, Antonia Kambolis, Megan Neil, Shane Donagher, Madison Gough, Amber Goldberg, Delia Kravits, Aden Lugo, Leah Munoz, Gus Peterson, Kassidy Scott, Amina Anekwe, Kennedy Morgan, Julia deGuia, Alexa deRonde, Maya Cadeau, Abigail Insana, Brian Jones, Aidan Joyce, Valentina Pappano, Talia Williams, Yusuf Abouelnaja, Xara Diaz, Audrey Koch, Eloise Lemos, Keira McGrath, Quinn McHugh, Ewan O’Sullivan, Cullen Smith and Giuliana Zeppa.
