MAPLEWOOD, NJ — The Maplewood Department of Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs continues sponsorship SeniorStudio, a free, studio painting program specifically designed for Maplewood residents ages 60 and older.
Because of increasing interest in the program, this spring year, for the first time, there will be separate classes for beginners, who have not participated in Maplewood or South Orange painting classes, and advanced, for those with some art experience.
“It’s hard to believe that what started as a single class is now a regular spring and fall program with four classes. We’ve clearly tapped into a strong interest,” Maplewood Recreation Director Melissa Mancuso said.
The 10-week program includes eight classes and field trips to the Newark Museum and a local art gallery. New classes begin April 2 and continue until June 4. All classes are on Mondays at DeHart Community Center, 120 Burnett Ave., Maplewood.
Registration is open through March 23, either in-person at Maplewood Senior Center, 106 Burnett Ave. in Maplewood, or by contacting Michelle Wesley at [email protected] or 973-763-0750.
“We are proud that Maplewood is a community where our older residents can remain and engage in programs that allow them to broaden their knowledge, explore their creativity and improve their physical health,” Mayor Vic DeLuca said. “SeniorStudio has been one of our many success stories.” The instructor for the program will be Lorena Vera, a professional painter and experienced arts educator, instructor and tutor, who has taught numerous art studio workshops locally.
SeniorStudio was conceived and developed by long-time Maplewood resident Dan Kaslow, who said, “I think what seniors in SeniorStudio have shown is that creativity in Maplewood knows no age limits.”
