Scheier to be featured speaker at luncheon

Mindy Scheier

WEST ORANGE, NJ — Mindy Scheier will serve as keynote speaker at the annual Thanksgiving Luncheon on Wednesday, Nov. 22, at noon. The annual Thanksgiving Luncheon, jointly sponsored by the West Orange Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Rotary Club and UNICO, will be held at Mayfair Farms in West Orange.

Scheier is the founder and president of the Runway of Dreams Foundation, a nonprofit that works to broaden the reach of adaptive clothing and promote people with disabilities in fashion through inclusion, empowerment and opportunity. A fashion designer by trade, Scheier spent more than 20 years working in fashion as a key member of the design team for the INC collection and stylist for Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City.

Scheier’s career path took a slightly new direction when her son Oliver, who has a rare form of muscular dystrophy, wanted to wear jeans to school like his friends. She soon realized that millions of people around the globe were also struggling to access fashionable clothing that meets their needs. She envisioned a world where adaptive clothing for people with disabilities was mainstream and developed modifications — including closures, adjustments and alternative ways in and out of the clothing — to meet a wide variety of needs within the differently-abled community.

All attendees are asked to bring nonperishable foods for the townwide food drive. Food donations will benefit the Holy Trinity Food Pantry. Tickets for the Thanksgiving Luncheon are charged They are available through the West Orange Chamber of Commerce website at www.westorangechamber.com or in person at the mayor’s office, 66 Main St. in West Orange.
