WEST ORANGE, NJ — Several West Orange High School students came home with top awards at the 2019 Speech and Theatre Association of New Jersey competition, held Jan. 12 at Montclair State University.

Sophomore Olivia Ridley won the first place Governor’s Award for Dramatic Monologue and, along with freshman Maria Nalieth, won the first place Governor’s Award for Musical Duet.

Senior Melanie Chamorro and junior Ezana Negash were finalists in Improvisational Pairs and sophomore Veena Steaphan was a finalist in Musical Solo.

Overall, 46 West Orange students competed in several categories with students from across New Jersey, including comedic and dramatic pairs, comedic and dramatic monologues, and ensemble-based scenework.

“Everyone did a great job in a variety of categories. Congratulations to everyone!” enthused drama teacher and adviser Wendy Mapes.

Ridley and Nalieth will attend the STANJ Governor’s Award Ceremony in Trenton in May.
