‘Willy Wonka Jr.’ to debut at Edison Middle School

WEST ORANGE, NJ — Edison Middle School will perform its spring musical, “Willy Wonka Jr.,” on Friday, April 20, and Saturday, April 21, at 7 p.m. The school is located at 75 William St.

The show is an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic children’s book, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” which became the smash movie “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,” starring Gene Wilder in 1971. Director Tim Burton followed with a 2005 remake starring Johnny Depp and a Broadway version closed this past January.

“Willy Wonka Jr.” follows the adventures of good-hearted Charlie Bucket, who wins one of five golden tickets hidden in Wonka candy bars. The winners receive a free tour of the Wonka factory led by Willy Wonka himself and a lifetime supply of candy. Charlie’s grandfather accompanies him to the factory, where they meet the other four ticket holders and their families. The other children are nothing like Charlie, and they struggle to follow the rules Mr. Wonka sets. What ensues is an unexpected series of consequences that leads up to the surprise of Charlie Bucket’s life.

Molly Eisen is directing, Bonnie Pomeroy is the musical director and Melanie Racanelli is set designer. Tickets will be on sale at the door to each performance.
