16 guns removed from Newark’s streets, juvenile arrested

NEWARK, NJ — A juvenile was arrested on the morning of Sunday, Feb. 11, for possession of a loaded .40 caliber handgun. Newark police have removed 16 guns from city streets thus far this week.

This arrest came after a citizen reported that a juvenile suspect had pointed a gun at him near the intersection of Parkhurst and Goble streets.

Within minutes, police located a juvenile matching the suspect’s description and arrested him without incident for possession of a loaded .40 caliber handgun. The Newark youth was charged with the unlawful possession of a handgun, aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

Newark officers have removed 16 guns from the city streets the previous week, with a total of 79 thus far this year, versus 42 during the same period last year.

A second male, with the suspect, was interviewed and released after officers found no evidence linking him to the incident.
