39-year-old woman arrested in Newark homicide case

NEWARK, NJ — Stephanie Martinez, 39, has been arrested and charged with the murder of Raul Rios, 34, according to an Oct. 1 press release from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

On Tuesday, Sept. 28, at approximately 8:58 a.m., Rios’ body was found in a parking lot on the 400 block of Springfield Avenue in Newark. The victim was pronounced dead at 9:34 a.m. 

Martinez, who was captured on video, was identified as a suspect and was subsequently arrested in Pennsylvania by Pennsylvania State Police at the Fogelsville Barracks.

Martinez has since been charged with murder, felony murder, robbery and theft. 

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department, is handling the investigation.

These are accusations. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they enter a guilty plea or are found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
