Fatal hit and run in Newark under investigation

NEWARK, NJ — Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose announced Feb. 21 that the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department, is investigation a fatal hit and run that resulted in the death of Jesus Acevedo, 63, of Elizabeth.

On Tuesday, Feb. 19, at approximately 6:12 p.m., Acevedo was struck by a tractor trailer that left the scene. Acevedo was pronounced dead at the scene 6:48 p.m.

The incident occurred in the 100 block of Avenue L in Newark. At the time of the incident, the victim was assisting another tractor trailer that was backing up. The investigation is active and ongoing.
