NEWARK, NJ — The Newark Police Department’s Fugitive Apprehension Team has arrested two suspects, one wanted for a carjacking and the second for a robbery in two separate incidents.
Newark residents Al-Fuquan Wright and Sandra Fernandes, who were wanted by Criminal Investigation detectives, were both arrested on the morning of Monday, Nov. 28, by members of the department’s Fugitive Apprehension Team.
Fernandes was being sought for her involvement in the robbery of a wheelchair-bound man on Wednesday, Nov. 16, and Wright of committing a carjacking and kidnapping on Friday, Nov. 4.
Fugitive detectives responded to E. Kinney Street on Monday, Nov. 28, shortly before 7 a.m., after determining that Fernandes was likely hiding in an apartment. After locating her, Fernandes was arrested without incident. Also arrested was her brother, Jose Fernandes, 34, who was found to have an open contempt of court warrant.
Sandra Fernandes is charged with robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery.
Fernandes, 38, was being sought, after detectives determined she participated in the robbery of a wheelchair bound man on Wednesday, Nov. 16.
The victim was returning to his residence at the 100 block of Prospect Street, when he was accosted by two males who robbed him at gunpoint.
Witness said the two suspects fled in a waiting BMW. Police continue to seek the identities of the two suspects who remain at large.
Wright, 22, was arrested at a South 11th Street residence on Monday, Nov. 28, shortly before 10 a.m.
Wright was being sought after he and an accomplice forced a 24-year-old Newark man to drive them to several ATM machines in the city on Friday, Nov. 11, in an attempt to withdraw money from the victim’s account. After one of the failed attempts, the victim was able to escape from the suspects unharmed and called the police.
Wright is charged with robbery, carjacking, kidnapping, possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes and conspiracy.
No weapon was ever shown during the incident. Wright’s accomplice remains at large.
Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose noted, “The members of the Fugitive Apprehension Team continue to do excellent work at making our city safer. Through their dedication and tireless efforts, these detectives have arrested and removed more than 616 fugitives from our streets so far this year.”
