Newark mounted police arrest three shooting suspects

NEWARK, NJ — Members of the mounted police arrested three men for a shooting incident that occurred on Monday, Nov. 14.

At approximately 2:15 p.m., mounted officers were patrolling the area of Lyons Avenue and Clinton Place, when they observed Alex Cora, 39, of Newark, shooting a firearm at William A. Jones, 20, and Quamarly Boykins, 18, also of Newark, who were both running on Clinton Place.

Police apprehended and arrested each suspect. Detectives have determined that Jones and Boykins were exchanging gunfire with Cora.

Cora was found in possession of a loaded 9mm handgun. He is charged with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

Jones and Boykins are each charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and conspiracy.

Police recovered two additional guns from a barbershop at the location after detectives were granted a search warrant on Tuesday, Nov. 15.

Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose commended the police officers involved in the apprehension of the three suspects.
