NEWARK, NJ — Darron Shivers, 49, of Newark, was arrested for making a false report to police after shooting himself on Friday, Nov. 11.
At approximately 10:35 p.m., Newark police responded to University Hospital on a call of a person shot. Shivers indicated to officers that he was walking in the area of 1st and Orange streets, when he was accosted by a male brandishing a gun. Shivers further reported that, after he and the unknown assailant struggled, the man shot him and fled in an unknown direction. He added that passersby drove him to the hospital for treatment of the non-life threatening gunshot wound he sustained in the altercation.
Shivers was treated at the hospital and released.
As a result of their investigation, detectives determined the injury was self-inflicted and Shivers had shot himself inside his vehicle while on the New Jersey Turnpike near Newark.
Shivers was arrested without incident and charged with making a false report to law enforcement.
