Newark police to conduct DWI Enforcement during holiday season

NEWARK, NJ — DWI enforcement will be deployed throughout the city during the holiday season and police have made more than 100 DWI arrests and issued 4,516 summonses through a citywide safety check operation conducted since January 2017.

As part of the Department of Public Safety’s DWI Enforcement, underwritten by a $34,899.85 grant received through a Drunk Driving Enforcement Fund from the state of New Jersey, 126 checkpoints were established citywide. These locations were identified based on analyses of traffic-related data, including collisions and traffic summonses.

Since the beginning of the year, police conducted 6,070 motor vehicle stops, issued 4,516 summonses and 99 tows, and made more than 100 DWI arrests.

“These more than 100 DWI arrests made by our patrols represent an exponential number of saved lives because these individuals posed a public safety hazard on our streets,” Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose said. “Just last evening, a police sergeant was injured, after his vehicle was struck by a drunk driver. We will continue to arrest people who think they are going to drink and drive in the city of Newark — especially during the holiday season, when celebrating individuals may attempt to drive drunk.”
