NJIT student killed in hit and run in Newark

NEWARK, NJ — Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II and New Jersey Institute of Technology Police Chief Joseph Marswillo announced Nov. 14 that the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating a fatal hit and run that resulted in the death of NJIT student Naomi R. Segura, 25, of Byram Township.

On Tuesday, Nov. 13, at approximately 9:20 p.m., Segura, a pedestrian, was struck in the vicinity of Central Avenue and Summit Street in Newark.

She sustained life-threatening injuries, was rushed to University Hospital, but ultimately succumbed to her injuries. She was pronounced dead at 1:10 a.m. on Nov. 14.

The car that struck her did not stop. The driver of a second car did stop and called for help.

The investigation is active and ongoing. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
