NEWARK, NJ — The fatal shooting of Jahahd O. Payne, 23, of Randolph, is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department, according to an Aug. 5 press release from acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens II and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose.
On Aug. 5, Newark police responded to the 200 block of South 9th Street, where they discovered Payne in a motor vehicle suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:42 a.m.
The investigation is active and ongoing. At this time no arrests have been made.
