Retired NYPD officer discharges weapon against robbery suspects

NEWARK, NJ — A retired New York City police detective discharged a weapon on Thursday, Nov. 10, at Commerce Street and McCarter Highway, after two robbery suspects accosted her.

At approximately 9:33 p.m., the 43-year old female NYPD detective was getting into her vehicle when she was approached by two males who demanded her money using a handgun.

During the robbery attempt the former detective, who retired nine months ago, discharged her weapon. The suspects fled after being shot and were apprehended by responding Newark police officers as they were running from the scene.

The detective recovered a replica gun used by the suspects.

The suspects, a 23-year old and a 27-year old, both of Newark, were apprehended by police and arrested. Both suffered non-life threatening injuries and were transported to University Hospital. The suspects were each charged with robbery. The investigation is continuing.
