NEWARK, NJ — A Newark man wanted by both Newark police and the New Jersey State Parole office was arrested Sept. 20 by Essex County sheriff’s detectives, and a loaded handgun was recovered during the arrest.
Sheriff Armando Fontoura said that detectives from his department’s Fugitive Squad attempted to serve an arrest warrant for Kevin Porter, 30, of Newark, at 55 Oriental St. in the Newark’s Central Ward on the evening of Friday, Sept. 20, when Porter saw the sheriff’s detectives and attempted to flee the scene.
“Our detectives observed Porter exit out the back entrance of 55 Oriental St. and run northbound through the yards behind 317 Broadway,” Fontoura said. “Our fugitive squad followed in close pursuit and witnessed Porter enter a residence at 317 Broadway. It was here that our detectives proceeded to knock on the door, announce their presence and requested that the door be opened.”
Upon request, a resident of 317 Broadway opened the door and sheriff’s detectives entered the residence. They immediately located Porter on the stairs of the second floor, handcuffed him and placed him under arrest
In a search of the dwelling, the sheriff’s detectives discovered and seized a fully loaded, Smith and Wesson SP40 VE with a high capacity magazine and other various forms of ammunition.
Porter, who was wanted by the Newark Police Department for a shooting incident in July that left two bystanders injured, was charged with resisting arrest, unlawful possession of a handgun, illegal possession of ammunition and burglary. The suspect was additionally charged with a parole violation due to the terms of his parole with the NJ State Parole Board, which were not disclosed to the Essex County Sheriff’s Office.
These charges are merely accusations. All persons are considered innocent unless or until they are found guilty or enter a guilty plea in a court of law.
