Six charged with brutally beating 3-year-old

NEWARK, NJ — Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose announced Dec. 12 that six adults have been charged with severely beating a 3-year-old boy in Newark.

The following individuals were arrested and charged with aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a 3-year-old child: Patricia Gamarra, 62; Mary Buchan, 55; Patricia Buchan, 28; Bridget Buchan, 23; Natacha Smith, 43, who is the mother of the victim; and Homer Searcy, aka Omar Searcy, 39. All six defendants live in the same house in Newark.

They are accused of the systematic and coordinated beating of the child with a belt and fists and pouring scalding water on him as a form of corporal punishment.

The investigation leading to the arrest was conducted by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit in conjunction with the Newark Police Department’s Special Victims Bureau.

These are accusations. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they enter a guilty plea or are found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
