GLEN RIDGE, NJ — Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II announced Nov. 30 that the Professional Standards Bureau of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is reviewing a fatal Glen Ridge car crash that resulted in two deaths.
At approximately 10 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 26, two men were killed in a single-car fatal crash in the area of High Street and Bloomfield Avenue in Glen Ridge. They were pronounced dead at the scene. The preliminary investigation indicates the driver hit a light pole, which caused the car to hit a tree and burst into flames.
Both the driver of the car, Galo G. Flores, 25, of Harrison, and the passenger, Carlos Nieves, 20, of Newark, were pronounced dead at the scene at 10:17 p.m.
The preliminary investigation indicates that Montclair police officers had attempted a motor vehicle stop of a 2008 Mercedes when the vehicle sped away at a high rate of speed. The Montclair police officers followed the vehicle with police lights activated.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office investigates all police pursuits when there is a serious injury or death. Consequently, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Professional Standards Bureau will be investigating this incident. The investigation is active and ongoing.
