MAPLEWOOD, NJ — On Monday, Aug. 28, the Maplewood Fire Department extinguished a two-alarm fire at 1865 Springfield Ave. Firefighters responded to the scene at approximately 8:30 a.m. and by 9 a.m. the fire was under control.
The fire damaged a vacant, one-story building that was undergoing renovation. All workers had exited the building prior to firefighters arriving and no one was injured. The gym and apartment building around the 1865 Springfield Ave. were evacuated and no one was injured.
According to the Maplewood Fire Department, after initially extinguishing the fire, a short time later, while still on scene, firefighters noticed that the smoke was building up again. Firefighters then determined that the fire had rekindled in the space above the concrete ceiling and roof; they extinguished the rekindled fire by cutting holes through the roof of the building.
Maplewood received assistance at the scene from Irvington, South Orange, Millburn, Union and East Orange fire departments and Montclair, Union and West Orange provided coverage for the township for the duration of the incident, according to the Maplewood Fire Department.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
