WEST ORANGE, NJ — The West Orange School District Summer Enrichment Program wrapped up July 28 after a week of musical and dance performances by students, teachers and high school helpers. A tech class slideshow by tech students highlighting the program was also presented.
“Over 430 students participated in this year’s summer enrichment program,” St. Cloud music teacher Scott Tomlin said in a press release. Tomlin serves as the on-site program coordinator. High school nurse Denise Werzen was on hand to assist with any medical issues and assist Tomlin.
Morning classes from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and extended day program offerings were available to students.
“Students enjoyed the programs,” Tomlin said, “and the extended day program provided a nice variety of activities for the students from 12:15 to 4 p.m.”
Program offerings were wide ranging and varied and included offerings for students in grades two through eight. Academic programs included science, math, technology, computers, creative writing, English as a second language and the return of Mandarin Chinese. Music programs featured instrumental classes in clarinet, piano, guitar, percussion, saxophone, cello, violin, flute and oboe, as well as band and orchestra. Other fine arts programs included dance, drama and art, such as calligraphy, painting, ceramics and crafts. In addition, fitness programs and fitness classes like baseball fundamentals, “Gym Jamboree,” and field/gym for afternoon students rounded out the day.
“It’s amazing to witness what the teachers can do in a short time and what the students were able to learn in such a narrow window of instruction,” district fine arts supervisor Lou Quagliato said. “Focused daily lessons really enables the students to retain information and produce positive results.”
