Authorities investigate homicide of Irvington man in Newark

 

NEWARK, NJ — Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray  and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose have announced that authorities are investigating the death of an Irvington resident on Saturday, Feb. 20, in Newark. Shortly before 8:30 p.m., Newark police officers were dispatched to the area of Salem Street and Rockland Terrace on reports of a shooting in progress. Arriving officers located an unresponsive male suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The victim, who has been identified as Steve A. Malcolm, age 32, was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:55 p.m., according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly of the prosecutor’s Homicide Unit.

This matter is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department, according to Fennelly, who added that the investigation is active and ongoing at this time.
