Dead body in Maplewood found to be result of hit and run

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Maplewood Police Chief Robert Cimino announced today, June 3, that the male discovered on Wyoming Avenue and Hickory Drive on May 30 at approximately 4 a.m. appears to have been struck by a motor vehicle, resulting in his death.

His name is not being released pending notification of next of kin. It is unclear what links, if any, the victim has to Maplewood.

The driver of the vehicle has not yet been identified.

Shortly before 4 a.m. on May 30, Maplewood police officers were dispatched to the intersection of Wyoming Avenue and Hickory Drive on a report of a person lying in the street. Arriving units observed an unresponsive male on Wyoming Avenue. The male was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:19 a.m., according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly of the Prosecutor’s Homicide Unit.

At this time, the investigation is active and ongoing. The investigation is being handled by the Maplewood Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force.
