WEST ORANGE, NJ — Tears and laughter filled the Hazel Elementary School auditorium on May 4 as the community turned out in force to say goodbye to beloved Principal Edwin Acevedo, who has assumed superintendency of the Long Hill School District.

Newly-appointed interim Principal Heather Carr was present for the sendoff, along with West Orange Board of Education members Sandra Mordecai and Mark Robertson. Heartfelt comments from present and former PTA presidents, students, parents, office staff and teachers moved those assembled. Acevedo, clearly emotional, hugged each speaker, and was overwhelmed as he spoke to the crowd.

“I love you all,” he said. “I’ll be in touch … remember I’m only a phone call away.”

A video tribute to Acevedo included several of the things that endeared him to students, including frequent trips to the dunk tank and being taped to the wall.

Gifts, cupcakes — lots of cupcakes — and a beautiful cake designed by Hazel parent Chyna Chester capped off the special evening.
