IRVINGTON, NJ — For the eighth straight year, the Irvington High School Consumer Bowl team has won the Essex County Championship. The county competition took place on Thursday, Feb. 11, at West Caldwell Tech High School. Irvington High School competed with West Side High School, Immaculate Conception High School and the following Essex County Vocational/Technical Schools: Bloomfield, Newark Tech., North 13th Street and West Caldwell.

The 20th annual event, sponsored by the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs, featured students competing in a fun, game-show style format to test their knowledge about consumer laws and fraud. “The students that participate in the consumer bowls learn invaluable information that they can use now to protect themselves and their loved ones and in the future when they begin to purchase cars, homes, etc.,” said NJ Division of Consumer Affairs Bowl Coordinator Dulcelina Pena.

Pena’s comments were echoed by team captain Oluchukwu Ibe, who said, “Healthy competition is always good, especially when it’s fun. Studying these laws and rules are beneficial to everyone, so there really isn’t a loser at these competitions, because everyone wins.” Team member Obadai Annan added, “This competition will benefit me by making me a savvy consumer, everywhere I go.”

Joseph Romano, team adviser said, “We are looking forward to our next competition on April 22, when we defend our Northern Region Championship title against schools from six other northern New Jersey counties. We anticipate tough competition, but the students are committed to studying in preparation of the event. I want to thank Ms. Pena and the entire staff of the Division of Consumer Affairs for sponsoring the Consumer Bowl Competition.”  Congratulations to: Oluchukwu Ibe, captain, and members Faith Northern, Zaynah Mohammed, Obadai Annan and Miraj Seepersad.
