WEST ORANGE, NJ — Liberty Middle School held a 17-minute walkout on March 14 in memory of the 17 students and teachers killed in the Parkland, Fla., shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Feb. 14.
Teachers and staff felt the walkout was powerful for those who participated. The student-led safety team that was created after the tragedy in Parkland put together their thoughts and actions to get the message out that students should not have to face violence in their schools. Their message, which was directed to government officials, was one of “enough is enough” and a call to do something to prevent further violence and lost lives due to gun violence.
“Around 475, or 91 percent, of our students chose to participate in today’s student-led peaceful protest and to honor the lives lost in Parkland,” Principal Bob Klemt said. “Our students acted so responsibly during the 17-minute tribute.”
