WEST ORANGE, NJ — The West Orange community knows how diverse it is, but it’s always nice to be recognized for it. Mt. Pleasant Elementary School was recently named by Public School Review as one of the “Most Diverse Schools in the U.S.” and a top-10 school in the state of New Jersey.
Principal Julie DiGiacomo was contacted in late March by Public School Review to advise her of Mt. Pleasant’s ranking.
“We really are that diverse,” DiGiacomo said in a press release.
On June 10, Mt. Pleasant celebrated its new status with its annual carnival and barbecue, followed by a special assembly acknowledging the diversity of the student body. Each student created a flag depicting their ethnicity and waved them as DiGiacomo called out the names of different countries.
“I’ve already called out so many countries and we still have so many more,” she told students.
Students sang “It’s a Small World” and headed outside for photos and a video as a picture perfect day came to a close.
