Newark police crack down on street racers

NEWARK, NJ — According to Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose, during the nights of friday, June 17, and Saturday, June 18, police have responded to citizen complaints by targeting individuals who engage in or watch street races on some of the industrial streets located in the city’s Ironbound section.

Approximately 100 traffic summonses were issued, one person was arrested for being an unlicensed driver, 37 individuals were questioned and one person was ticketed for a quality of life offense during those two days.

On the operation’s first night, a significant number tickets were issued to Jersey City residents. On the second night, the offenders included residents from Elizabeth, Jersey City, Union City, Newark and several other towns.

Most of the summonses were issued for motor vehicle infractions occurring near or on Avenue P, although numerous locations popular with the street racing were checked.

As stated previously, these are ongoing operations and will continue until those who chose to watch or street race get the message: not here. Police will not allow them to come to the city to needlessly endanger not only their lives, but the lives of others.
