NEWARK, NJ — Authorities are investigating an incident in which a Newark police officer was struck by a vehicle on Sunday, June 12, at approximately 3:40 a.m., at the intersection of Foundry and Roanoke streets, while attempting to issue a motor vehicle summons to that very vehicle, which then fled from the area. The officer, who is 37 years old and a 14-year veteran, was rushed to University Hospital, where he is being treated for serious injuries, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly, of the Prosecutor’s Major Crimes Unit, who added that the officer is currently in stable condition. The identity of the officer is being withheld for security reasons.
This matter is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department. The investigation is active and ongoing at this time, according to Fennelly.
