No new info on shooting death on Springfield Ave.

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — The investigation into the shooting death of Altariq A. Brown, 30, of Livingston is currently ongoing. Brown was shot at approximately 8:20 p.m. on Saturday, March 24, at Bradfords Barr, a restaurant on Springfield Avenue in Maplewood; he was pronounced dead at the scene just 15 minutes later.

According to Essex County Prosecutor’s Office spokeswoman Katherine Carter on April 9, there is no new information available.

A few days after the shooting, then-acting Maplewood Police Chief Jimmy DeVaul announced that the Maplewood Police Department had increased its presence in the area and was working with the ECPO.

I want to reassure the community — residents and proprietors — that the Maplewood Police (Department) is monitoring the area by way of increased foot patrols and high visibility inspections,” DeVaul said in a March 27 email. “This is an active investigation and we are working collaboratively with the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office. As the investigation continues, further information will be released as it becomes available and at a time when such communication will not impede the investigation.”

DeVaul, who was sworn in as police chief April 4, also urged residents to be vigilant and to report any suspicious persons, vehicles or behavior to the Maplewood police by calling 9-1-1 or 973-762-1234.

“We are asking anyone with information to call the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force tips line at 1-877-847-7432,” DeVaul said. “Callers can be anonymous.”
