Police investigate homicide of Irvington man on Feb. 23

The Newark Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force are investigating the fatal shooting of Omar Heyward, 34, of Irvington.

Heyward was fatally shot on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 6:51 a.m., in the 100 block of Manchester Place in Newark. When officers arrived, he was in the street suffering from what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:11 a.m.

The investigation is active and ongoing. At this time, no arrests have been made. No suspects have been identified.
