WEST ORANGE, NJ — Students at Roosevelt Middle School held an organized protest on March 14 in honor of the students and staff that lost their lives in Parkland, Fla., on Feb. 14.
Students lined Gilbert Place and stood in silence for 17 minutes, one minute for each student or staff member killed.
“A month ago today 17 students and teachers lost their lives to a senseless act of violence in Parkland, Fla,” Principal Lionel Hush told the students. “This morning, we will be participating in the ‘National School Walkout,’ which is being held across the country to make a statement about preventing gun violence in our schools and to honor those that lost their lives.”
Participation in the demonstration was voluntary.
