WEST ORANGE, NJ — Monday, Nov. 7, was Red, White & Blue Day at Washington School; the annual Veterans’ Flag Salute Ceremony took place in celebration of Veterans Day, with students and teachers gathering in the Auditorium to salute veterans and receive a flag to wear. In attendance were Army Spc. 4th Class Kim Ameli, Vietnam; Chaplain George Zeevalk, World War II; USMC Cpl. Harvey Lott, Lebanon; Army Staff Sgt. Peter J. Longo, WWII; and Army veteran Dennis Linder, who was wounded in combat in Vietnam.
The ceremony included a flag salute, a speech from Principal Marie De Maio about the importance of Veterans Day, a statement from fifth-grader and Student Council representative Chima Marazere, the singing of the national anthem by Lott; and the singing of “My Country ’Tis of Thee” by the honor choir, led by Alison Soccio.
