WEST ORANGE, NJ — West Orange High School has announced the names of its 2017 valedictorian and salutatorian. Derek Lim was named valedictorian and Mariel Go as salutatorian.

Lim is the captain of cross-country track and hopes to start a Science Olympiad team at the high school. He wants to major in mathematics and attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Go is president of the Interact Club and also plans to major in mathematics, attending Rutgers University.

Class rank is determined by student grade-point average after junior year. The rankings are released and students are notified by the end of September. This helps students to apply for early admission to colleges. As the year progresses, colleges to which the students apply receive updates of their grades each semester.
