West Orange man arrested for strangling Livingston woman

WO-dwayne birchler-WLIVINGSTON, NJ — Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Livingston Police Chief Craig Handschuch announced May 17 that the Livingston Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force are investigating a homicide.

On Sunday, May 15, Livingston Police responded the home of Lindsay A. Ulyate, 32, at approximately 4:30 a.m. where she was found unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 5:11 a.m., according to the release from the Prosecutor’s Office.

Her death was ruled a homicide following the autopsy. The cause of death was strangulation.

Dwayne Birchler, 33, of West Orange was arrested May 17 and charged with one count of manslaughter.

Superior Court Judge Norma J. Grimbergen set bail at $150,000. Birchler is currently being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark.

The investigation is active and ongoing. No other information is available at this time. These charges are merely accusations. All persons are presumed innocent until proved guilty in a court of law.
