WEST ORANGE, NJ — Students from West Orange High School attended the Family, Community and Career Leaders of America state conference in Cherry Hill on Nov. 20 and returned with one gold, two silver and two bronze medals.
The annual conference brings together high school FCCLA students for competitions and information sessions in various areas of family and consumer sciences — issues that affect individuals, families and communities, especially issues that relate to the basic needs of food, shelter, clothing and relationships.
Amy Butcher and Jordyn Raymon earned a gold medal by packing a Caregiver Carry-All for a 3 to 5-year-old traveling to Disney. Students were required to assemble a day’s worth of backpack supplies and activities.
Olivia Williams and Ebun Adegbite received a silver medal for their Go Green Recycle Project, creating a recycling bin from old magazines. The club also earned a silver medal for its creative Ube Cupcake Display in the Cupcake Competition. Sarah Thomas, Kori Isaac and Nanma Biju baked and created a 60-cupcake tree display for a fundraiser. Money collected was donated for Puerto Rico relief.
WOHS FCCLA President Anu Adegbite scored bronze in a competitive Apple Bake-Off with her unique walnut and apple bar with streusel topping, and Dana Romaniello and Ashley Azana earned a bronze medal for their banner embodying the conference theme of “Generational Leaders.”
“West Orange High School was well-represented,” supervisor of career education and library science Nancy Mullin said.
