WEST ORANGE, NJ — West Orange Elks Lodge 1590 held its annual Elks Hoop Shoot basketball free throw contest at West Orange High School on Dec. 3. In the 10 and 11 age group, Gabriel Strassman took first place, Matthew Salmeron took second and Nesim Roy took third.
One week later, on Dec. 10, at the 2017-18 Elks Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest district finals, held at the Nutley Recreation Center, two West Orange competitors took home gold. West Orange students, from left, Alex Massung, a student at Roosevelt Middle School, was the first-place winner in the boys ages 12-13 category. Strassman, a student at Edison Central Six, was the first-place winner in the boys ages 10-11 category. Massung and Strassman will advance to the state finals, which will be held in South Plainfield on Feb. 11. Strassman won the state finals two years ago in the boys ages 8-9 category.
