WEST ORANGE, NJ — Three West Orange Board of Education members were recognized at the April 6 Essex County School Boards Association meeting for achieving advanced training certification. In addition, current West Orange Board of Education President Sandra Mordecai was elected as the new president of the Essex County School Board.
Mark Robertson became a Certificated Board Member, Laura Lab achieved Master Board Member Certification and Mordecai became a Certified Board Leader. Extensive training hours are required to achieve certification at any level within the New Jersey School Boards Association. To achieve these levels, Robertson had to complete 20 credits, Lab had to complete 40 credits and pass an exam, and Mordecai had to complete 60 credits and pass an exam. Areas of training and study for certification include advocacy, labor relations, finance, leadership, governance, student achievement, legal and policy, district savings, and sustainability and Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.
Along with the recognition for Mordecai, Lab and Robertson, the entire West Orange Board of Education, including Ron Charles and Irv Schwarzbaum, was re-certified in 2016.
