WEST ORANGE, NJ — Another stellar season of competition for the West Orange High School cheerleaders continued with a first-place win in the Varsity Medium Non-Tumbling Division at the UCA Pocono Regional Competition in Kutztown, Pa., on Dec. 4. The win gave the team an automatic bid to the UCA National High School Cheerleading Championship in Orlando, Fla., from Feb. 11 to 12, 2017.

The national championship is the most prestigious cheerleading competition in the country. This is the third year the varsity cheer squad will compete at Walt Disney World Resort in the televised competition on ESPN and ESPN2. Last year the Mountaineers placed sixth nationally and took regional and state honors.

In addition to the varsity squad, the junior varsity squad also competed and won first place in the non-tumble division, also earning a bid to the nationals.

“This is the first time JV has ever competed regionally and although we will not be sending them to nationals this season, it is still a huge accomplishment paving the way for the future of our program,” head coach Olivia Del Spina said in a press release.

On Nov. 13, the Large Non-Tumble Varsity Game Day team placed at the Northeast Championship in Toms River, also receiving an automatic bid to nationals.

“The coaches are unbelievably proud of all three routines and the girls have worked extremely hard to get to this point,” Del Spina said. “The girls continue to amaze us and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for nationals!”
