NEWARK, NJ — Nearly 600 turkeys and hundreds of other food items filled more than 10 trucks, SUVs and vans as the Essex County Sheriff’s Office completed its annual Thanksgiving Food Drive for the needy and homeless.

This is the 30th year that Sheriff Armando Fontoura and officers have worked with the community for this event. The sheriff said it continues to be one of the most rewarding programs in which his office takes part. This year the Essex County Sheriff’s Office received its most turkey donations by far.

“This project is a labor of love for the members of our department,” Fontoura said. “It is our opportunity to share with our less fortunate neighbors, and we’re so happy that the community continues to donate and help us as we try and provide Thanksgiving joy to everyone in Essex County.”

The sheriff’s office’s Thanksgiving convoy made stops at scores of Essex County soup kitchens, food pantries, social service agencies, homeless shelters, houses of worship and schools to ensure the availability of Thanksgiving meals and to stock the food shelves for the coming winter months.
