Bloomfield College honored for ‘Excellence and Leadership’

BLOOMFIELD, NJ — The executive committee of The Newark City of Learning Collaborative announced that Bloomfield College will be awarded the first NCLC Excellence and Leadership award.

This award recognizes an institution’s hard work and dedication to supporting the youth of Newark in acquiring skills, fortitude and services needed to access and succeed in college.

The award was to be presented during the NCLC recognition ceremony on March 23, at Rutgers University-Newark, Paul Robeson Campus Center.

“With over 20 percent of our overall student body hailing from Newark, Bloomfield College is a minority-serving institution offering 52 percent African American and 27.5 percent Hispanic students access to higher education,” said college president Richard Levao. “We are proud to support these men and women as they pursue their educational goals while at the same time helping the NCLC achieve their goals. We are honored to receive this recognition.”

The goal of the NCLC is to increase the percentage of residents with postsecondary degrees, certificates, and quality credentials from the current 17 percent to 25 percent by 2025.

The mission is to promote quality, equitable access and success to all students living in Newark, especially underrepresented groups, such as African American and Latino males and adult learners, and those with some college but no degree.
