County Prosecutors Association of New Jersey announces scholarships

NEWARK, NJ — Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino announced Aug. 9 that the County Prosecutors Association of New Jersey is offering four memorial scholarships: the Oscar W. Rittenhouse, the Andrew K. Ruotolo Jr., the Harris Y. Cotton and John H. Stamler memorial scholarships.

Each scholarship is a one-year grant in the amount of $3,500 paid directly to the recipient. Previous recipients cannot apply again.

To be eligible for the Oscar W. Rittenhouse Memorial Scholarship, an applicant must be a New Jersey resident who has been accepted for admission to a law school and has an interest in pursuing a career as a prosecutor.

To be eligible for the Andrew K. Ruotolo Jr. Memorial Scholarship, an applicant must be a New Jersey resident who has been accepted to a law or graduate school and has exhibited an interest in and commitment to enhancing the rights and well-being of children through child advocacy programs.

For the Harris Y. Cotton Memorial Scholarship, an applicant must be a New Jersey resident who has been admitted to a law school and has an interest in pursuing a career as a prosecutor with an emphasis on domestic violence and hate crime prosecutions.

For the John H. Stamler Memorial Scholarship, an applicant must also be a New Jersey resident and a sworn law enforcement officer seeking educational advancement on a college or graduate level degree to improve his or her effectiveness as a law enforcement officer.

Applicants for all four scholarships must have a demonstrated financial need.

The deadline for submitting applications is Sept. 15. Applicants will be notified of the committee’s decision in October. Applications can be obtained by contacting Terri Eide at 609-989-6309 or at teide@mercercounty.org. Applications are also available online at www.mercercountyprosecutor.com.
